What is Matcha?
The word Matcha comes from the Japanese words matsu (“to rub, to daub, to paint”) and cha (“tea”). It is a finely ground green tea powder made from shade-grown leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Unlike traditional green tea, where leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha is whisked into water—allowing you to consume the entire leaf. Packed with antioxidants, L-theanine, and chlorophyll, matcha offers a balanced energy boost. Its flavour is slightly nutty and grassy, with a pleasant hint of bitterness, lingering umami, and a delicate vegetal sweetness. The steaming process, common to Japanese green teas, enhances these signature notes while maintaining matcha’s vibrant green colour.
History of Matcha:
Matcha traces its roots to China’s Tang Dynasty (618-907), where tea was pressed into bricks for preservation. It gained prominence during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), and in 1191, Japanese Buddhist monk Myoan Eisai introduced matcha to Japan. Zen monks embraced it for its meditative benefits, leading to its integration into the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chado), a practice embodying harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.
