Meet Our Partners: The Farmers Behind Our Specialty Ingredients

Chirag Kenia |

Behind every ingredient in our catalogue is a person — a farmer, a harvester, a producer — who has dedicated their knowledge, land, and labour to growing something exceptional. At Urban Platter, we think you should know who they are.

Our Sourcing Philosophy

We don't buy ingredients from anonymous commodity markets. We work with suppliers who can trace their products back to specific regions, farms, or harvesting communities. This traceability isn't just about quality assurance — it's about accountability and respect for the people at the start of our supply chain.

Our sourcing criteria are straightforward:

  • Origin transparency: We know where every ingredient comes from, down to the country and region.
  • Fair trade principles: We prioritise suppliers who pay fair prices to growers and harvesters.
  • Quality over volume: We'd rather carry a smaller range of exceptional ingredients than a large range of mediocre ones.
  • Sustainable practices: We favour suppliers who use environmentally responsible growing and harvesting methods.

The Castanheiros of Peru

Our Brazil nuts come from wild-harvesting communities in the Peruvian Amazon. These families have harvested Brazil nuts for generations, using traditional methods that leave the forest intact. Their livelihoods depend on a healthy rainforest — making them among its most committed protectors.

The Seaweed Farmers of South Korea

Our nori and seaweed products are sourced from South Korea's coastal aquaculture regions, where seaweed farming has been practised for centuries. Seaweed requires no freshwater, no fertiliser, and no arable land to grow — making it one of the most sustainable foods on earth. The farmers who cultivate it are custodians of a tradition that is both ancient and urgently relevant.

India's Heritage Growers

From Goa's cashew orchards to Bihar's makhana (fox nut) wetlands, many of our Indian-origin products come from regions with deep agricultural heritage. We work with suppliers who support smallholder farmers and preserve traditional growing practices that have sustained communities for centuries.

Our Ongoing Commitment

We're committed to deepening these relationships over time — visiting our key suppliers, sharing their stories with you, and continuously raising the bar on what responsible sourcing looks like in the specialty food industry.

Because when you know the people behind your food, it tastes better. And it means more.
