Why We Choose Glass Jars: Sustainable Packaging at Urban Platter

Chirag Kenia |

Packaging is a choice. And at Urban Platter, it's one we take seriously — because what surrounds your food says as much about our values as what's inside it.

The Problem with Plastic

The global food industry generates millions of tonnes of single-use plastic packaging every year. Much of it is not recyclable in practice — it's too contaminated, too mixed, or simply not collected. It ends up in landfills, waterways, and oceans, where it persists for hundreds of years.

We knew from the beginning that we didn't want to be part of that story.

Why Glass?

Glass is one of the most sustainable packaging materials available. Here's why we chose it for many of our core products:

  • Infinitely recyclable: Unlike plastic, glass can be recycled endlessly without any loss in quality or purity.
  • Inert and food-safe: Glass doesn't leach chemicals into food, even over long storage periods. What you taste is the ingredient — nothing else.
  • Reusable: Our customers regularly repurpose Urban Platter jars for storage, spice organisation, and even home decor. A jar that lives on is a jar that doesn't become waste.
  • Premium preservation: Glass provides an excellent barrier against moisture, oxygen, and light, keeping ingredients fresher for longer and reducing food waste.

The Trade-offs we Acknowledge

We believe in transparency, so we'll be honest: glass is heavier than plastic, which means higher transport emissions per unit. We offset this by optimising our shipment density, working with logistics partners who prioritise efficient routing, and choosing glass selectively — for products where it makes the most sense for preservation and reuse.

We're not claiming perfection. We're claiming intention and continuous improvement.

What's Next

We're actively exploring additional sustainable packaging options across our range, including compostable pouches for dry goods and reduced-plastic secondary packaging. As better materials become available and economically viable, we'll adopt them.

Our commitment is simple: every packaging decision we make will be guided by what's best for the product, the customer, and the planet — in that order.
